Casino Nova Scotia and the Online Rules
An evening at the waterfront casino and a session on an online site are two separate things, with separate rules. Here is how Nova Scotia handles the second, in plain terms, from the provincial site to how this guide is paid.

The provincial site
alc.ca and its regulator
In Nova Scotia, alc.ca is the provincially regulated online site, operated by Atlantic Lottery on behalf of NSGC (Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation), the provincial Crown corporation. It added an online casino in July 2022 and a live casino after that. Atlantic Lottery products are restricted to players 19 and over, matching the age rule at the casino door.
Who regulates it all, then? Gambling in the province is overseen by Service Nova Scotia's Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel & Tobacco Division, or AGFT. It operates apart from NSGC and from the operators running the games.
Private sites
Private sites and the province
Then there are private online casinos, the ones not run for the province. Nova Scotia has no licensing or registration scheme for them. So there is no provincial licence for such a site to show.
The casino on Upper Water St is a different case. Great Canadian Entertainment runs it for NSGC, the provincial Crown corporation, and has done so for more than 20 years.
Breaks
Pauses on alc.ca
On alc.ca, self-exclusion runs for 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. A shorter break lasts from 1 to 90 days. Neither can be undone early.
And what about the casino's own program? Voluntary self-exclusion at Casino Nova Scotia reaches both the Halifax and the Sydney casinos: gaming floors, restaurants and entertainment venues alike. It runs apart from the one on alc.ca. Staff anywhere in the casino can start it, and so can the Responsible Gambling Resource Centre at 902-424-8663.
This guide
Commission and the partner
Halifax Casino Soundings is an independent evening guide; it keeps no accounts and accepts no bets. Paid links, each labelled Ad, are found on the home page alone. They pay the guide a commission, and the partner may change.
Where does an Ad link go? It opens a private online casino. That site is not alc.ca and not Atlantic Lottery. It has no connection with Casino Nova Scotia, Great Canadian Entertainment or NSGC. The guide does not say the partner is licensed or legal in Nova Scotia.
Questions
Asked at the desk
What is the province's own online gambling site?
That site is alc.ca, which Atlantic Lottery operates on behalf of Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC). It gained an online casino in July 2022 and a live casino afterwards.
Can a private online casino hold a Nova Scotia licence?
Nova Scotia has no licensing or registration scheme for private online casinos, so there is no provincial licence to hold.
What age do you need to be for alc.ca?
Atlantic Lottery products, alc.ca included, are for players 19 and over. The casino door applies the same 19+ rule.
If you self-exclude at the casino, are you also off alc.ca?
The casino program covers the Halifax and Sydney casinos, their gaming floors, restaurants and entertainment venues. On alc.ca, self-exclusion is its own program, for 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. The two are separate programs.
